The process is described in a setup poster that is included with the printer, with more in-depth detail from the on-screen manual that is installed with the drivers and software. We found that the whole process took about 20 minutes from start to finish. The process involves unpacking the printer, installing the ink cartridges, installing the software and connecting the printer when prompted. The Deskjet 1000 is a simple printer to set up.

Not included is a USB cable or paper: you have to supply your own. Higher capacity versions of both are available: the HP61XL black ink cartridge costs about $28 and can print about 480 pages, while the HP 61XL color ink cartridge costs about $30 and can manage about 330 pages. The HP 61 color cartridge costs about $21, and covers about 165 pages. The HP type 61 black cartridge costs about $16 and, HP claims, will cover about 190 pages. You are now ready to resume printing with your HP Deskjet 1010 printer.The Deskjet 1000 uses two ink cartridges: one for black and one for color. Carefully lower the main cover to avoid damaging the printer, and you are finished. Install the 1010 cartridge into the opening of the carriage, then lower the cover down, making sure it lays flat. Lastly, remove the small tape strip from the bottom of the cartridge. You will need to remove the plastic protector by prying it away from the cartridge as you squeeze the handles together. Get the new Deskjet 1010 cartridge ready for installation by removing it from its box, then removing it from the plastic bag. Raise the small cover, then lift the cartridge out of the opening.

Start with the printer plugged in and turned on, then raise the access cover. The Deskjet 1010 is a very compact device, weighing only 6.8 pounds, though its speed and paper capacity are a bit lacking. Those who do a lot of printing, or who need to print photos at high quality will probably wind up disappointed, however. The Deskjet 1010 is an extremely basic inkjet printer for users who want simplicity. Users on a budget will want to consider using remanufactured HP 1010 ink instead of OEM versions. Upgrading to the high-capacity Deskjet 1010 ink cartridges will net around 480 pages for black and 330 pages for the tricolor supply. The standard black HP 1010 ink cartridge can provide up to 190 pages on average, while the tricolor supply provides up to 165 pages. The input paper tray is limited to only 60 sheets. Buyers also shouldn't expect to get a lot of heavy-duty use from it, with a recommended monthly page volume of only 250 to 500 pages. For average, everyday printing, however, it will suffice, especially for such a low purchase price. The maximum resolution of the machine is 600ењ†00 dpi, so don't expect extremely sharp results, especially for photos. The box lacks a USB cable, however, so users may need to purchase one separately. It measures 10x16.7x20 inches at a maximum, though, which is quite a good fit for small spaces, and it weighs only 4.55 pounds even with the Deskjet 1010 printer ink installed. The compact design of the 1010 is impressive, but it is smaller folded up for storage than it is for printing.

Printer ink doesn't come in separate colors, but high-capacity HP 1010 ink supplies help to lower the cost per page. It can print up to 20 pages per minute in black and 16 pages per minute in color, though its first page out time of 17 seconds is a bit slow. With a rock-bottom price that is tailored for home users on a budget, the HP Deskjet 1010 inkjet printer provides pretty solid speed and output.
